That is strange. Can you try one last thing - can you update meson with "pip3 install --upgrade meson" and see if that makes any difference? [If you are using your distro's meson from /usr/bin right now, you'll probably also need to run "hash meson" afterwards too].
Perhaps we have a hidden dependency on later meson versions or something like that.
