I suppose that pass (as the whole implementation) is linux specific?
If so, wouldn't it make sense to have it under linux subdir?

Are you sure that compiler_barrier() is enough here?
On some archs CPU itself has freedom to re-order reads.
Or I am missing something obvious here?
