# DPAA2 PMD Patch Series Review
## Summary
This is a 13-patch series (v9-S2 01/13 through 13/13) for the NXP DPAA2 network PMD. The patches address a mix of bug fixes, feature additions, and refactoring. Below is a detailed review organized by severity.

## ERRORS
### Patch 01/13: Integer overflow in CCSR region mapping
**Error 1: Missing error handling after `dpni_set_rx_tc_policing()` in dpaa2_mtr_meter_destroy()**
In `drivers/net/dpaa2/dpaa2_meter.c`, function `dpaa2_mtr_meter_destroy()`:
```c
ret = dpni_set_rx_tc_policing(dpni, CMD_PRI_LOW,
priv->token,
(uint8_t)mtr_id, &cfg);
if (ret)
DPAA2_PMD_ERR("TC[%u] policing disable failed (%d)",
mtr_id, ret);
return 0;
```
The function logs the error but always returns success. If disabling policing fails, the meter state is inconsistent: freed in software but still active in hardware.
**Fix:** Return the error code:
```c
if (ret) {
DPAA2_PMD_ERR("TC[%u] policing disable failed (%d)", mtr_id, ret);
return -ret;
}
return 0;
```

### Patch 05/13: Meter and policing support
**Error 2: TOCTOU race in `dpaa2_mtr_profile_add()` and `dpaa2_mtr_policy_add()`**
Both functions check for duplicate ID, unlock, perform an operation (allocate or validate), then re-lock and insert. A concurrent thread can insert the same ID between the unlock and re-lock, bypassing the duplicate check.
Example from `dpaa2_mtr_profile_add()`:
```c
rte_spinlock_lock(&priv->meter_lock);
curr = LIST_FIRST(&priv->profiles);
while (curr != NULL) {
if (curr->profile_id == profile_id) {
rte_spinlock_unlock(&priv->meter_lock);
rte_mtr_error_set(error, EEXIST, ...);
ret = -EEXIST;
goto err;
}
curr = LIST_NEXT(curr, next);
}
// Lock is held here for the insert, but the allocation and validation
// happened before the lock was taken, so the pattern is safe.
// However, the unlock/relock pattern in policy_add is problematic.
```
Actually, re-reading: the profile_add function does hold the lock across the duplicate check and insert. The issue is in **`dpaa2_mtr_policy_add()`**, which does:
```c
rte_spinlock_lock(&priv->meter_lock);
// check for duplicate
if (dpaa2_policy == NULL) {
rte_spinlock_unlock(&priv->meter_lock);
return rte_mtr_error_set(...);
}
// ... more checks that unlock and return ...
// Later, insert without re-checking
LIST_INSERT_HEAD(&priv->policies, dpaa2_policy, next);
rte_spinlock_unlock(&priv->meter_lock);
```
Wait, re-reading again: the policy_add function allocates `dpaa2_policy` *before* taking the lock, then holds the lock across the duplicate check and insert. So it is also safe.
Actually, reviewing the code more carefully: both functions allocate the structure, then take the lock, check for duplicates, and insert--all while holding the lock. The lock is only released on error paths. So this is **not** a TOCTOU race. My initial assessment was incorrect. This is not an error.

### Patch 01/13: Integer overflow in CCSR region mapping
**Error 3: Potential NULL pointer dereference in `lsx_ccsr_map_region()`**
In `drivers/net/dpaa2/dpaa2_recycle.c`:
```c
tmp = mmap(NULL, map_len, PROT_READ | PROT_WRITE, MAP_SHARED, fd, start);
close(fd);
if (tmp == MAP_FAILED)
return NULL;
return (uint8_t *)tmp + offset;
```
The `close(fd)` happens before checking if `mmap()` succeeded. If `mmap()` fails, `tmp == MAP_FAILED`, but the fd is already closed, which is fine. Then the function returns `NULL`. However, the **file descriptor leak** concern is moot because close happens regardless.
But wait: the original code was:
```c
tmp = mmap(NULL, len, PROT_READ | PROT_WRITE, MAP_SHARED, fd, start);
close(fd);
if (tmp != MAP_FAILED)
return (uint8_t *)tmp + offset;
else
return NULL;
```
The patch changes it to:
```c
tmp = mmap(NULL, map_len, PROT_READ | PROT_WRITE, MAP_SHARED, fd, start);
close(fd);
if (tmp == MAP_FAILED)
return NULL;
return (uint8_t *)tmp + offset;
```
This is functionally equivalent and not an error. The fd is closed in both success and failure cases. No resource leak.

### Patch 05/13: Meter and policing support
**Error 4: Missing validation that `profile->mode` is a valid `dpni_policer_mode` enum value**
In `dpaa2_mtr_profile_add()`, the code sets `dpaa2_profile->mode` based on `profile->alg`:
```c
if (profile->alg == RTE_MTR_NONE) {
dpaa2_profile->mode = DPNI_POLICER_MODE_PASS_THROUGH;
} else if (profile->alg == RTE_MTR_TRTCM_RFC2698) {
dpaa2_profile->mode = DPNI_POLICER_MODE_RFC_2698;
} else if (profile->alg == RTE_MTR_TRTCM_RFC4115) {
dpaa2_profile->mode = DPNI_POLICER_MODE_RFC_4115;
} else {
DPAA2_PMD_ERR("Policer profile alg(%d) not supported!", profile->alg);
rte_mtr_error_set(error, ENOTSUP, ...);
ret = -ENOTSUP;
goto err;
}
```
The `else` branch correctly rejects unsupported algorithms. No error here.

### Patch 05/13: Meter and policing support
**Error 5: Burst size overflow check happens after assignment**
The code validates that `cbs` and `pbs` fit in `uint32_t` after they are assigned to the `dpaa2_profile` structure:
```c
dpaa2_profile->cir = profile->trtcm_rfc2698.cir;
dpaa2_profile->cbs = profile->trtcm_rfc2698.cbs;
dpaa2_profile->pir = profile->trtcm_rfc2698.pir;
dpaa2_profile->pbs = profile->trtcm_rfc2698.pbs;
// ... later:
if (dpaa2_profile->cbs > UINT32_MAX ||
dpaa2_profile->pbs > UINT32_MAX) {
rte_mtr_error_set(error, EINVAL, ...);
ret = -EINVAL;
goto err;
}
```
The `cbs` and `pbs` fields in `struct rte_mtr_meter_profile` are `uint64_t`, and `dpaa2_profile->cbs` / `pbs` are also `uint64_t`. The overflow check happens *after* assignment, but since both are `uint64_t`, no truncation occurs before the check. The check is correct.
However, the `dpaa2_mtr_hw_program()` function later does:
```c
cfg.cbs = (uint32_t)profile->cbs;
cfg.ebs = (uint32_t)profile->pbs;
```
If the profile was created with a burst size > `UINT32_MAX`, this cast truncates. But the `profile_add()` function rejects such profiles, so this is safe. No error.

## WARNINGS
### Patch 05/13: Meter and policing support
**Warning 1: Missing release notes for internal policing API**
The patch adds `dpni_rx_tc_policing_cfg` structure and `dpni_set_rx_tc_policing()` function in `drivers/net/dpaa2/mc/fsl_dpni.h`. However, these are internal MC (Management Complex) API wrappers, not part of the public DPAA2 PMD API. The release notes correctly document the user-facing `rte_mtr` support. No action needed.
---
### Patch 03/13: Support larger burst size
**Warning 2: Hardcoded SoC family check for burst size limit**
In `dpaa2_tm.c`:
```c
static inline uint32_t dpaa2_get_burst_max(struct dpaa2_dev_priv *priv)
{
if (dpaa2_dev_cmp_dpni_ver(priv, 8, 7) >= 0)
return (dpaa2_svr_family == SVR_LX2160A) ? 229375 : 0xF7FF;
return 0xF7FF;
}
```
The LX2160A-specific limit (229375) is hardcoded. Future SoCs with DPNI version >= 8.7 will incorrectly use 0xF7FF unless this function is updated. Consider documenting the LX2160A limit in a comment, or querying it from hardware if possible.
---
### Patch 10/13: Restructure parser processing
**Warning 3: Parser result dump may produce incomplete output**
The `dpaa2_dump_print()` helper in `dpaa2_pmd_logs.h` accumulates a line in a thread-local buffer and logs it on newline. If the buffer fills (512 bytes) without a newline, the line is flushed. However, if a thread exits or a signal interrupts before a newline, the last partial line is lost.
For debug logging this is acceptable (Info-level note), but if this is relied upon for correctness, it's a Warning. In this case, it's only used for parse result dumps (debug feature), so **Info** is more appropriate. Downgrading to Info.
---
### Patch 01/13: Integer overflow in CCSR region mapping
**Warning 4: `sysconf(_SC_PAGESIZE)` may return different values across calls**
The code calls `sysconf(_SC_PAGESIZE)` on every invocation of `lsx_ccsr_map_region()`. While the page size is fixed for a given system, calling `sysconf()` repeatedly is unnecessary overhead. Consider caching the result in a static variable initialized once.
Example:
```c
static long get_page_size(void)
{
static long page_size = 0;
if (page_size == 0) {
page_size = sysconf(_SC_PAGESIZE);
if (page_size <= 0)
page_size = -1; // cache the error too
}
return page_size;
}
```
Then use `get_page_size()` instead of `sysconf(_SC_PAGESIZE)` directly.

## INFO
### Patch 02/13: Set Tx confirmation on device init
**Info 1: Removed per-queue Tx confirmation setup**
The patch moves Tx confirmation mode setting from `dpaa2_dev_tx_queue_setup()` to `dpaa2_dev_init()`. The old code only set the mode when queue 0 was set up, which silently skipped configuration if the application never set up queue 0. The new code sets it unconditionally at init time, which is correct.
This is a bug fix (correctness improvement), but since it's a change in when the hardware is programmed, it could affect applications that rely on the old (incorrect) behaviour. However, relying on the old behaviour would be a bug in the application. No action needed beyond what's in the patch.
---
### Patch 07/13: Set default flow miss action per device
**Info 2: Removal of `DPAA2_FLOW_CONTROL_MISS_FLOW` environment variable**
The release notes correctly document this as a removed item. The default miss flow is now set to the lowest-priority flow ID (`min(fs_entries, dist_queues) - 1`). Users who relied on the environment variable must update their applications to use the rte_flow API.
---
### Patch 12/13: Remove unused soft parser driver
**Info 3: Removed VXLAN and eCPRI rte_flow pattern support**
The release notes correctly document this. The soft parser blob had to be loaded by the boot firmware, so the PMD loader was dead code. VXLAN and eCPRI patterns that depended on the soft parser are also removed. This is a breaking change for applications that tried to use these patterns, but since they never worked, the impact is minimal.
