# DPDK Patch Review
## Patch 1/4: test/af_packet: ignore stray packets in loopback test
### Errors
None identified.
### Warnings
None identified.
### Info
**Pre-existing helper function pattern:**
In `do_rx_burst()`, the existing code already frees received mbufs with `rte_pktmbuf_free_bulk(bufs, nb_rx)` after processing.
This is correct and is not introduced by this patch.
**Pre-existing resource cleanup:**
In `alloc_tx_mbufs()`, the error path correctly frees all allocated mbufs with `rte_pktmbuf_free_bulk(bufs, count)` when `rte_pktmbuf_append()` fails.
This is correct and is not introduced by this patch.

## Patch 2/4: net/af_packet: filter Rx of outgoing packets in the PMD
### Errors
**Missing error check on `write()` system call:**
Line 285 in `do_tap_fd_tx_burst()`:
```c
if (write(fd, frame, sizeof(frame)) != (ssize_t)sizeof(frame))
return -1;
```
The function calls `write()` in a loop and returns -1 on failure, but the caller in `test_af_packet_ignore_outgoing()` does not check the return value or propagate the error properly.
The test sets `err = "TAP inject failed"` but this is a test error message, not proper error handling.
However, this is test code in `app/test/`, so the severity is reduced.
More critically, if `write()` fails partway through the loop, the test continues with partial data sent, which could cause the test to give incorrect results.
The test should verify the return value:
```c
if (do_tap_fd_tx_burst(tap_fd, n_inject) != 0) {
err = "TAP inject failed";
goto out;
}
```
This is already present, so the error handling is acceptable for test code.
**Potential resource leak on error path:**
In `test_af_packet_ignore_outgoing()`, the function allocates mbufs with `alloc_tx_mbufs(bufs, n_inject)` (line 1242).
If this succeeds but `do_tx_burst()` transmits fewer packets than allocated (line 1243), the remaining mbufs in the `bufs` array are neither transmitted nor explicitly freed before the `bufs` array goes out of scope.
Looking at the helper `do_tx_burst()` (lines 252-265), it calls `rte_pktmbuf_free_bulk()` on unsent mbufs, so this is handled.
No leak exists.
### Warnings
**Release notes entry could be more specific:**
The release notes state "Added `ignore_outgoing` so `rte_eth_rx_burst()` returns only incoming packets."
This is clear, but it could mention that the default is 0 (disabled) for backward compatibility.
However, the note is acceptable as written.
### Info
**`parse_uint()` validation (pre-existing):**
The code calls `parse_uint(pair->key, pair->value, &ignore_outgoing, 1)` (line 1290) with max value 1.
This correctly validates that `ignore_outgoing` is 0 or 1.
The validation is introduced by this patch and is correct.
**Test coverage:**
The patch adds three new test cases:
- `test_af_packet_invalid_ignore_outgoing()` - validates rejection of invalid values
- `test_af_packet_ignore_outgoing_single_queue()` - tests single queue with both 0 and 1
- `test_af_packet_ignore_outgoing_multi_queue()` - tests multiple queues with both 0 and 1
This is good test coverage for the new feature.

## Patch 3/4: net/af_packet: use kernel to filter single-queue Rx
### Errors
None identified.
### Warnings
None identified.
### Info
**Socket option setting:**
The code calls `setsockopt()` with `PACKET_IGNORE_OUTGOING` (line 1042).
The comment correctly notes that this option is available since Linux 4.20, and DPDK requires Linux 5.4+, so no feature check is needed.
The error path correctly logs and propagates the error if `setsockopt()` fails.
**Conditional logic:**
The condition `ignore_outgoing != 0 && nb_queues == 1` (line 1041) correctly restricts the socket option to single-queue scenarios, as documented.
The fallback `rx_queue->ignore_outgoing = ignore_outgoing != 0 && nb_queues > 1` (line 1071) correctly enables PMD-side filtering only for multi-queue scenarios when `ignore_outgoing` is set.
**Documentation update:**
The patch updates `doc/guides/nics/af_packet.rst` to document that `PACKET_IGNORE_OUTGOING` is used for single-queue ports.
This matches the code behavior.

## Patch 4/4: net/af_packet: use kernel to filter multi-queue Rx
### Errors
None identified.
### Warnings
None identified.
### Info
**Macro definition:**
The patch defines `PACKET_FANOUT_FLAG_IGNORE_OUTGOING` if not already defined (line 36).
The comment notes this was added in Linux 6.2 and older kernels ignore it.
This is correct - setting an unknown flag in `fanout_arg` for `setsockopt(SOL_PACKET, PACKET_FANOUT, ...)` is safe on older kernels.
**Flag setting:**
The code sets the flag opportunistically: `fanout_arg |= PACKET_FANOUT_FLAG_IGNORE_OUTGOING << 16` (line 1009).
The shift by 16 is correct - fanout flags occupy the upper 16 bits of the `fanout_arg` value.
This matches the kernel API.
**Fallback behavior:**
The PMD-side filtering (checking `sll->sll_pkttype == PACKET_OUTGOING` in `eth_af_packet_rx()`) is retained from patch 2/4.
This serves as a fallback for kernels before 6.2 that do not support the fanout flag.
The documentation correctly explains this.

## General Comments
**Coding style:**
- All code follows DPDK C style (8-character tabs, proper indentation, brace placement)
- No trailing whitespace observed
- Include guards and comment style are correct
- Boolean comparisons use explicit `!= 0` checks where appropriate
**Documentation:**
- Release notes are updated appropriately (patch 2/4)
- Driver documentation (`af_packet.rst`) is updated in all relevant patches
- Doxygen comments are not needed for test code
**Test quality:**
- New tests follow the `TEST_ASSERT` macro pattern correctly
- Tests use the `unit_test_suite_runner` infrastructure
- Tests are registered with `REGISTER_FAST_TEST`
- Test coverage is comprehensive (single-queue, multi-queue, invalid input)
**Patch organization:**
- Each patch compiles independently
- Logical progression: fix stray packet issue, add feature, optimize with kernel support
- No forward dependencies within the series
**No mailmap issues:**
The `.mailmap` entry is appropriate for a new contributor.
