## Patch 09/15: net/txgbe: fix SFP hot-plug when auto-negotiation is on
**Correctness:**
- Re-arms AN73 watchdog after module detection
- Cancels pending alarms before re-arming to prevent multiple instances
- Uses atomic flag `sfp_an_alarm_enabled` to gate alarm callbacks during stop
- Sets atomic flag to 1 before `rte_intr_enable()` in start
- Sets atomic flag to 0 before cancels in stop
- All alarm handlers check the flag with acquire ordering before proceeding
- Polls module-present pin on every AN73 tick to detect cable removal
- **Warning**: The atomic load/store uses `rte_memory_order_release` for stores and `rte_memory_order_acquire` for loads. This is correct for a flag that guards alarm execution, as it ensures the flag write happens-before any alarm handler reads it.
**Style:**
- Code follows DPDK style
- Uses `rte_atomic_load_explicit()` / `rte_atomic_store_explicit()` with appropriate ordering
**Findings:** None
---
## Patch 10/15: net/txgbe: fix DAC hot-plug on 40G NIC with auto-negotiation
**Correctness:**
- Polls module-present level every 2 seconds to compensate for missing GPIO interrupt on 40G
- Restores `link_valid` on xpcs path after earlier timeout left it false
- Re-arms watchdog only while `sfp_an_alarm_enabled` is set
**Style:**
- Code follows DPDK style
**Findings:** None
---
## Patch 11/15: net/txgbe: fix 40G FFE tuning applied to first lane only
**Correctness:**
- Replicates FFE tap values over all four lanes (40G PHY holds one byte per lane)
- FFE fields grow to 32-bit to hold replicated values
- Devargs parsing moved after shared code init so MAC type is known for 40G defaults
**Style:**
- Code follows DPDK style
- `S40G_TX_FFE_4LANE()` macro correctly replicates byte across 4 lanes
**Findings:** None
---
## Patch 12/15: net/txgbe: add pre2 FFE tap and backplane capability devargs
**Correctness:**
- Adds `ffe_pre2` devarg for E56 second pre-cursor tap
- Adds `bp_capa` devarg for 40G backplane advertisement selection (0=both KR4+CR4, 1=KR4 only, 2=CR4 only)
- Release notes updated

- `doc/guides/rel_notes/release_26_11.rst` updated
**Findings:** None
---
## Patch 13/15: net/txgbe: add devarg to turn off Tx laser for 40G NIC
**Correctness:**
- Adds `laser_off` devarg to disable Tx laser on port stop
- For DAC cables: disables PCS
- For QSFP modules: writes SFF-8636 Tx disable via I2C
- Correctly checks `acquire_swfw_sync()` result before I2C write
- Does not release semaphore if acquire failed
- Restores Tx enable state when link comes up (not gated on `laser_off` to clear stale disable from previous run)
**Style:**
- Code follows DPDK style

**Correctness:**
- Replaces unreliable ephy 0x163c poll with AN FSM poll (0x78010, value 0x9)
- Re-runs page exchange on every AN next-page interrupt (was only run once)
- Initializes FFE init mode bits in `cfg_40g()`/`cfg_10g()`
- Runs `txgbe_e56_set_rxs_ufine_le_max()` after RXS osc init
- Writes 0x78001 = 0x7 in AN programming sequence
- Clears `hw->bp_link_mode` in `txgbe_set_link_to_sfi()` to prevent stale backplane mode after switching to SFI
- Avoids register reads only used by disabled BP debug logs
**Style:**
- Code follows DPDK style
- Wraps `BP_LOG()` in `rte_log_can_log()` check to avoid unnecessary register reads when logging is disabled
**Findings:**
### Error 1: Missing error check on `txgbe_e56_exchange_page()`
**Location:** `drivers/net/txgbe/base/txgbe_e56_bp.c:2532`
**Issue:**
```c
/* 10 RXS_DISABLE - TXS_DISABLE - CMS_DISABLE */
/* dis phy tx/rx lane */
rdata = rd32_ephy(hw, 0x1400);
```
The function `txgbe_handle_e56_bkp_an73_flow()` removes the inline page exchange and the error check that followed it:
```c
- status = txgbe_e56_exchange_page(hw);
- if (status) {
- BP_LOG("Exchange page failed\n");
- return status;
- }
```
The page exchange is now called from the watchdog before entering this function (see patch 14 hunk in `txgbe_ethdev.c`), but the watchdog does not abort the training on exchange failure -- it only does `goto an_status` and returns. This means if the exchange fails, the training proceeds with invalid/uninitialized link parameters.
The CL72 training result `status` is still checked at the end of `txgbe_handle_e56_bkp_an73_flow()`, but the exchange failure is never propagated up.
**Recommendation:**
The watchdog should not call `txgbe_handle_e56_bkp_an73_flow()` if the page exchange failed. Either check the return value of `txgbe_e56_exchange_page()` in the watchdog and skip the training call, or re-add a lightweight check at the top of `txgbe_handle_e56_bkp_an73_flow()` that verifies the exchange completed successfully (e.g., check `hw->fsm == 0x8`).

## Patch 15/15: net/txgbe: align link capabilities and DAC classification
**Correctness:**
- Reworks AML40 link capabilities into four branches: backplane, DAC, 40G QSFP, 10G SFP
- Adds 40G active cable transceiver identification (`qsfp_type_40g_active_core0/1`)
- Correctly identifies 40G active cables via SFF-8636 byte 131 bit 0
- Unifies DAC classification on `txgbe_is_dac_cable()` across all paths
- Removes misclassification of 10G active cables (da_act_lmt) as optical modules
**Style:**
- Code follows DPDK style
**Findings:**
### Warning 1: 10G-only DAC disables `autoneg` but comment says "keep devarg unchanged"
**Location:** `drivers/net/txgbe/base/txgbe_aml40.c` (AML40) and `drivers/net/txgbe/base/txgbe_aml.c` (AML)
**Issue:**
The commit message states:
> Keep the bp_auto devarg unchanged when a 10G-only DAC disables AN.
But the code does:
```c
if (hw->phy.fiber_suppport_speed == TXGBE_LINK_SPEED_10GB_FULL) {
*autoneg = false;
} else {
*autoneg = hw->devarg.auto_neg;
}
```
This **overwrites** the function's output parameter `*autoneg` to `false`, which is correct for capability reporting (a 10G-only DAC does not support autoneg), but the commit message phrasing "keep the bp_auto devarg unchanged" is potentially misleading. The `hw->devarg.auto_neg` field itself is not modified by this code.
**Recommendation:**
Clarify the commit message to say "Does not modify `hw->devarg.auto_neg` when a 10G-only DAC disables AN" or "Returns `*autoneg = false` for 10G-only DAC without changing the stored devarg." The code is correct; the message could be clearer.
**This is a documentation/commit-message issue, not a code bug.**
---
## Overall Assessment
**Correctness:**
- **1 Error** (patch 14: potential missing error propagation for page exchange failure before training)
- **0 Warnings** at Error/Warning level (the autoneg phrasing in patch 15 is an Info-level comment on commit message clarity)
**Style:**
- All patches follow DPDK coding style
- Atomic operations use correct ordering
- New macros and constants properly defined
- Release notes and documentation updated
**Process:**
- Cc: stable at dpdk.org correctly applied to fixes
- Fixes: tags reference correct commits
- New features documented in release notes

## Detailed Findings
### Patch 14 - Error 1: Missing error propagation for page exchange failure before CL72 training
**Severity:** Error
**Description:**
In `drivers/net/txgbe/base/txgbe_e56_bp.c`, the function `txgbe_handle_e56_bkp_an73_flow()` no longer includes an inline page exchange or its error check. The page exchange is now called from the watchdog (`txgbe_dev_e56_check_bp_event()` in patch 14), but the watchdog does not abort the training flow on exchange failure -- it only logs and returns, allowing the next tick to potentially re-enter training.
**Code Location:**
```c
/* drivers/net/txgbe/txgbe_ethdev.c (from patch 14) */
if (value & VR_AN_INTR_PG_RCV) {
BP_LOG("%d 2.1 *** Wait page changed ....\n", hw->port_id);
ret = txgbe_e56_exchange_page(hw);
if (ret) {
BP_LOG("%d 2.2 *** Exchange page failed\n", hw->port_id);
goto an_status; /* <-- does not prevent next tick from calling training */
} else {
BP_LOG("%d 2.2 *** Wait page changed ..done..\n", hw->port_id);
wr32_epcs(hw, 0x100ab, 0);
exchange_done = true;
}
}
if (exchange_done) {
BP_LOG("%d 2.2.2 *** Enter training\n", hw->port_id);
ret = txgbe_handle_e56_bkp_an73_flow(hw); /* <-- proceeds without re-checking exchange result */
...
}
```
**Problem:**
- If `txgbe_e56_exchange_page()` fails, the watchdog does not set any persistent state to block the training call on the next interrupt
- The `exchange_done` flag is a local variable; it is false on the next tick even if the exchange succeeded earlier
- This allows CL72 training to run with invalid link parameters if the exchange ever timed out
**Suggested Fix:**
Either:
1. Add a field in `struct txgbe_hw` (e.g., `bool page_exchange_valid`)
